BREAKING
NEWS; Chris Paul has been traded to the Lakers… or has he? The Lakers
were set to acquire Chris Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar
Odom. The Rockets were slotted to end up with Gasol, and the Hornets
were pegged to receive Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, and Goran Dragic.
So what happened to the blockbuster deal? Well, given that the league
has ownership control of the Hornets, rumor has it that tremendous
pressure has been applied to the league and its commissioner (by other
NBA owners) to squash the deal. It sounds like applying pressure worked,
as sources suggest that the deal has in fact been stopped due to the
probable PR nightmare that was ready to unfold. The other owners were
not about to let a league-controlled team send the NBA's top point guard
to L.A., which is conveniently the nation’s second largest television
market. As much as I'd love to see Chris Paul in a Lakers' uniform,
convenient is the right word if we're being honest… the kicker is that
this deal was essentially setting up another transaction that had
Dwight Howard also heading to the Lakers (possibly a Bynum for Howard
trade). Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard… that would be near
impossible to stop. I should also mention that Chris Paul is reportedly
exploring legal options and a few reports suggest that Paul will be a
no-show for Hornets camp. We will keep you posted as the info rolls in!
